Cold chain & protocol

The part that actually goes wrong.

Citrus rarely fails on the fruit. It fails on temperature and on paperwork, and the Indian protocol is unforgiving about both.

Cold treatment in transit

India’s revised export conditions, approved in August 2026, add cold treatment options for the control of fruit fly. Treatment is applied in transit: the container is brought to and held at a specified temperature for a specified period during the voyage, with the temperature recorded continuously and the record forming part of the consignment’s documentation.

The practical consequence is that the voyage is not just transport. It is the treatment. A temperature excursion is not a quality problem to be argued about on arrival — it is a failed treatment, and the consignment may not be admissible.

Why the extra options matter

Under the previous conditions the treatment requirement constrained which routes, vessels and schedules were usable. The additional options are what turn an occasional shipment into something a season can be planned around.

The chain

Where temperature is held, and by whom

  1. Orchard to packhouse

Field heat removed as quickly as possible after picking. Delay here cannot be recovered later in the chain.

  2. Pre-cooling

Fruit pulled down to carrying temperature before loading, not after. A container is a holding device, not a cooling one.

  3. Loading and sealing

Sealed reefer, probes placed and verified, phytosanitary certificate issued against the consignment.

  4. Voyage

Treatment period runs and is logged. Durban is the shortest South African leg to India, which is a shorter window for something to go wrong.

  5. Discharge and inspection

Temperature record presented with the documentation at Nhava Sheva or the nominated port.

Why interceptions matter to everyone

A market access protocol this new is fragile. A single interception does not only affect the exporter responsible — it affects the terms every South African exporter ships under. That is the argument for orchard-level traceability, and for treating documentation as part of the product rather than as administration.
